SUMMARY:(VA) - Battle of Yorktown Victory Parade
DESCRIPTION:October 19th\, 2024\, Saturday (10:30 am) – Battle of Yorktown Victory Parade\, Yorktown\, VA\nEvent Level: National\nHost/POC: Thomas Nelson Jr Chapter VASSAR / Gary Hodges.\nLocation:  Yorktown\, VA.\nFiring Event: No \nDetails: The Siege of Yorktown\, also known as the Battle of Yorktown\, the surrender at Yorktown\, or the German Battle\, ending on October 19\, 1781\, at Yorktown\, Virginia\, was a decisive victory by a combined force of the American Continental Army troops led by General George Washington and French Army troops led by the Comte de Rochambeau over a British army commanded by Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis. The culmination of the Yorktown campaign\, the siege proved to be the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War in the North American region\, as the surrender by Cornwallis\, and the capture of both him and his army\, prompted the British government to negotiate an end to the conflict.\nParade formation may be viewed here (click on link): Yorktown SAR Formation\nNote: this event also marks the bicentennial of the return of the Marquis de Lafayette to Yorktown in October 1824 and is expected to be a significant commemoration.

SUMMARY:National (VA) - Battle of the Capes - 11:00 AM
DESCRIPTION:September 7th\, 2024\, Saturday (11:00 am) – Commemoration of the Battle of the Capes\, Virginia Beach\, VA Event Level: National \nHost/POC:  Norfolk Chapter VASSAR / John Hall. \nLocation:  Vice Admiral Francois Joseph Paul de Grasse Statue\, Fort Story\, Virginia Beach\, VA. \nFiring Event: No \nDetails: The Battle of the Chesapeake\, also known as the Battle of the Virginia Capes or simply the Battle of the Capes\, was a crucial naval battle in the American Revolutionary War that took place near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay on September 5\, 1781. The combatants were a British fleet led by Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Graves and a French fleet led by Rear Admiral Francois Joseph Paul\, the Comte de Grasse. The battle strategically prevented the Royal Navy from reinforcing or evacuating the besieged forces of Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown\, Virginia. The French achieved control of the sea lanes against the British and provided the Franco-American army with siege artillery and French reinforcements. These proved decisive in the Siege of Yorktown\, effectively securing independence for the Thirteen Colonies. (Note: this event was approved to become a National Level Event by NSSAR leadership on March 3rd\, 2024.) Virginia SAR Color Guard Attendees: Dunaway\, Lynch\, Melhuish\, Osborn\, Thompson. \nFrench Navy Color Guard Attendee: TBA.

SUMMARY:(FL) Battle of Alligator Creek Bridge
DESCRIPTION:The Florida Society Sons of the American Revolution\, the City of Callahan\, and the West Nassau Historical Society celebrate the Anniversary of the American Revolutionary War Battle of Alligator Creek Bridge – 30 June 1778 \nTIME: 11:00 a.m. Saturday June 29\, 2024 \nLOCATION: West Nassau Historical Society\, 45383 Dixie Ave\, Callahan\, FL 32011 \nRSVP to Darryl.jaxsar.sec@att.net \nAMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR BATTLE OF Alligator Creek Bridge – The 3rd Florida invasion took place on June 30th\, 1778\, led by Col. Elijah Clark. It is known as the Battle of Alligator Creek Bridge. Col. Clark led his mounted Georgia Militia against British Major Prevost’s forces who were defending Alligator Creek Bridge.\nAs with the prior two expeditions\, there was a serious leadership disagreement between the two leaders: Governor Houstoun and General William Howe. Even though there were 2\,600 Continental and militia forces under the two leaders\, they did not agree on how to proceed with the invasion into Florida.\nGeneral Howe (with one half of the forces) opted to stay and occupy Fort Tonyn located about 14 miles north of the Alligator Creek Battle site on the St. Mary’s River\, even though it had been burned by British Loyalists.\nGovernor Houstoun opted to attack the 500 British Regulars\, 200 South Carolina Royalists and Seminoles at Alligator Creek Bridge. As Houstoun’s forces under General Screven chased the Loyalist forces back to the bridge\, the British Regulars thought Screven’s forces were also Loyalist forces retreating from the burned Fort Tonyn.\nCol. Elijah Clarke led his mounted militia against the British bridge entrenchments during the skirmish and Clarke was wounded. General Screven’s main reserve force\, seeing that Clarke was injured and being barely able to escape capture\, ordered a retreat. This was the third failed expedition. It was primarily due to a lack of coordination that had also doomed the two previous assaults on the Florida-Georgia borderlands.\nThe third invasion into Florida swamp land was a disaster. Although American battle casualties were only 13\, over 500 Patriots died of disease before they could be withdrawn from East Florida.

SUMMARY:National (DC) - Memorial Day Parade in Washington\, DC - 2:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:As we have discussed in passing\, I would very much like to get a good showing from the national color guard at this year’s National Memorial Day Parade.  PG Dodd and the incoming C.A.R. national president are both scheduled to attend.\n\nAs there are some misconceptions about the parade unit\, I wanted to state clearly that the unit is the NSSAR unit — not VASSAR or GW Chapter.  I have facilitated the NSSAR unit through the GW Chapter for many years\, but it has always been intended to be a national society effort.  NSSAR has always provided the certificate of insurance for the group.  Although this is not an easy one because of its location on the National Mall\, there are very few parade opportunities we have with as much public exposure and media amplification.\n\nThe parade is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Memorial Day\, Monday\, May 27\, 2024.  I am working on an earlier event that would help make this a two-fer for any color guardsmen who make the trip.  Additionally\, the GW Chapter awards a chapter-level medal to participants in the parade unit.\n\nAll of that is a long way of respectfully requesting that you put this on the color guard calendar.  Perhaps you might also consider letting me make a pitch for participation at your meeting during Spring Leadership.
