DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, the Battle of Pensacola Commemoration and Galvez Day Celebration will take place on FRIDAY\, May 10th in downtown Pensacola.\nWhile planning has just gotten underway for next year’s event\, the tentative schedule of events is:\n 08:00 Central- Color Guard Muster at Fort George – 501 N Palafox Street\n 09:00 Central – Color Guard Parade of Colors from Fort George to the Galvez Monument\n 09:00 – 10:30 Central- Galvez Day Ceremony\n 3:00 Central – SAR Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Minuteman Monument in Veteran’s Memorial Park on Bayfront Parkway in Pensacola\n(Note that all times are in the Central Time Zone.) \n  \nThe registration form for both the Color Guard and the Wreath Laying ceremony can be found on the Pensacola chapters website at www.pensacolasar.org.\nOnce on the website\, select the “Events and Programs” dropdown menu\, and click on “Battle of Pensacola Commemoration.” The form is a .pdf form that you can fill out on your computer and then email the completed form to: battle@pensacolasar.org.\nQuestions regarding registration or the event itself can also be directed to battle@pensacolasar.org or to Pensacola SAR\, c/o Chris Washler\, 3400 Connell Drive\, Pensacola\, FL\,   32503. \nReservation Form – Society Name\, Chapter or Organization Name\, Contact Name\, Contact Phone Number\, Email Address\, How does the group wish to be announced\, Number attending each event: Color Guard Procession\, Wreath laying Ceremony \n  \nThe Pensacola Chapter of the Florida Society has joined with the Pensacola Heritage Foundation to commemorate the Battle of Pensacola and honor General Galvez’s significant contribution to the cause of American Independence.\nEach year\, on the date of the British surrender\, the Pensacola Heritage Foundation holds a Galvez Day ceremony and the Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard opens the ceremony with a Parade of Colors that begins at Fort George\, and proceeds down Palafox Street to the nearly 20 foot high monument to General Galvez that stands at the corner of Palafox and Wright Streets. The SAR is also honored to provide a musket salute to close out the ceremony.\nThe Battle of Pensacola Commemoration is one of three National Color Guard events that take place in the state of Florida.

Parking is also available on the neighborhood streets but is not permitted along yellow curbs. The earlier you arrive\, the closer to the memorial your parking space will be.

SUMMARY:National (DC) - Memorial Day Parade in Washington\, DC - 2:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:As we have discussed in passing\, I would very much like to get a good showing from the national color guard at this year’s National Memorial Day Parade.  PG Dodd and the incoming C.A.R. national president are both scheduled to attend.\n\nAs there are some misconceptions about the parade unit\, I wanted to state clearly that the unit is the NSSAR unit — not VASSAR or GW Chapter.  I have facilitated the NSSAR unit through the GW Chapter for many years\, but it has always been intended to be a national society effort.  NSSAR has always provided the certificate of insurance for the group.  Although this is not an easy one because of its location on the National Mall\, there are very few parade opportunities we have with as much public exposure and media amplification.\n\nThe parade is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Memorial Day\, Monday\, May 27\, 2024.  I am working on an earlier event that would help make this a two-fer for any color guardsmen who make the trip.  Additionally\, the GW Chapter awards a chapter-level medal to participants in the parade unit.\n\nAll of that is a long way of respectfully requesting that you put this on the color guard calendar.  Perhaps you might also consider letting me make a pitch for participation at your meeting during Spring Leadership.
