DESCRIPTION:Wreath Laying for the Battle of Monmouth and General Friedrich von Steuben\, Monmouth Battlefield State Park\, Manalapan Township\, NJ \nThis is a National SAR Color Guard Event sponsored by the Monmouth Chapter. SAR Color Guard members from multiple states can be expected. The wreath laying coincides with a weekend-long encampment by reenactors who in years past have staged several reenactments of the battle\, fought on June 28\, 1778. The NJSSAR Color Guard honor both the battle and General Von Steuben\, the Drillmaster of Valley Forge\, without whose disciplined instruction the Continental Army might have fared poorly indeed. Von Steuben’s efforts at Valley Forge are said to have first shown results on a major scale here. (Note: A Battle of Monmouth Flag Streamer is available for participating chapters.) For event details contact: Jake Rue. \n\nArrive by 11 a.m. to prepare for the ceremony at noon. Color Guard will present a wreath at the Von Steuben memorial. DESCRIPTION:As we have discussed in passing\, I would very much like to get a good showing from the national color guard at this year’s National Memorial Day Parade.  PG Dodd and the incoming C.A.R. national president are both scheduled to attend.\n\nAs there are some misconceptions about the parade unit\, I wanted to state clearly that the unit is the NSSAR unit — not VASSAR or GW Chapter.  I have facilitated the NSSAR unit through the GW Chapter for many years\, but it has always been intended to be a national society effort.  NSSAR has always provided the certificate of insurance for the group.  Although this is not an easy one because of its location on the National Mall\, there are very few parade opportunities we have with as much public exposure and media amplification.\n\nThe parade is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Memorial Day\, Monday\, May 27\, 2024.  I am working on an earlier event that would help make this a two-fer for any color guardsmen who make the trip.  Additionally\, the GW Chapter awards a chapter-level medal to participants in the parade unit.\n\nAll of that is a long way of respectfully requesting that you put this on the color guard calendar.  Perhaps you might also consider letting me make a pitch for participation at your meeting during Spring Leadership.

The ceremony will be held at Seaton Creek Historic Preserve Park at 10:00 AM. If placing a wreath and/or participating in the color guard\, please arrive no later than 9:30AM to register your wreath. The park is located off I-95 at Exit 366 then head west 2.5 miles on Pecan Park Rd. to 2145 Gold Star Family Parkway / Arnold Rd.). This new 3.4 mile road accesses the Jacksonville National Cemetery that connects with to the Lem Turner Road (US#1). \nWe will have a social and orientation meeting Friday evening at 5:30PM on March 22th at the Long Horn Steak House\, 1366 Airport Rd\, Jacksonville\, FL\, 32218 Both the Hampton Inn and the Marriott\, Spring Hill Suites are in this same complex\, as well as a number of other hotels in the area. Traveling by water\, the Continentals encountered British troops at Amelia Island\, which delayed their rendezvous with the Georgia militia who traveled by land. On May 17\, a small force of 109 Georgia militia men was ambushed by a mixed force of British Army\, Loyalist militia\, and Native Americans near the mouth of Thomas Creek in Northeast Florida. Lieutenant Colonel John Baker of the Georgia forces and 41 of the Georgia militia men survived the battle. The encounter was the first major engagement and the second of three failed attempts by American forces to invade British East Florida. What became known as the Race to the Dan a few weeks later\, on February 14\, 1781\, became “The Crossing” when Greene’s army crossed the Dan River to safety near South Boston. The Crossing of the Dan became a turning point in the American Revolution\, precipitating events that led to the British surrender at Yorktown.

Located just off the square in Court Street Livery (16 W Court Street\, Washington\, GA) Look for the SAR Living History building signs. Various groups will have displays including one of colonial toys. Some refreshments will also be available. \n10:10 A.M. – The Georgia Society SAR combined Color Guard & Militia will gather at the Revolutionary War monument on the Washington City Square to Salute and Honor the Wilkes County Militia – (the Heroes of the Hornets’ Nest) and all Revolutionary War Patriots. \n10:30 A.M. – Color Guard and parade participants gather behind the Courthouse for the assembly of the Revolutionary War Parade — ALL the public (Children & Grownups) are welcome to participate in the event as our National Colors and re-enactors lead us around Washington Square.
