SUMMARY:National (DC) - Memorial Day Parade in Washington\, DC - 2:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:As we have discussed in passing\, I would very much like to get a good showing from the national color guard at this year’s National Memorial Day Parade.  PG Dodd and the incoming C.A.R. national president are both scheduled to attend.\n\nAs there are some misconceptions about the parade unit\, I wanted to state clearly that the unit is the NSSAR unit — not VASSAR or GW Chapter.  I have facilitated the NSSAR unit through the GW Chapter for many years\, but it has always been intended to be a national society effort.  NSSAR has always provided the certificate of insurance for the group.  Although this is not an easy one because of its location on the National Mall\, there are very few parade opportunities we have with as much public exposure and media amplification.\n\nThe parade is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Memorial Day\, Monday\, May 27\, 2024.  I am working on an earlier event that would help make this a two-fer for any color guardsmen who make the trip.  Additionally\, the GW Chapter awards a chapter-level medal to participants in the parade unit.\n\nAll of that is a long way of respectfully requesting that you put this on the color guard calendar.  Perhaps you might also consider letting me make a pitch for participation at your meeting during Spring Leadership.

SUMMARY:National (NJ) - Battle of Monmouth Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:Wreath Laying for the Battle of Monmouth and General Friedrich von Steuben\, Monmouth Battlefield State Park\, Manalapan Township\, NJ \nThis is a National SAR Color Guard Event sponsored by the Monmouth Chapter. SAR Color Guard members from multiple states can be expected. The wreath laying coincides with a weekend-long encampment by reenactors who in years past have staged several reenactments of the battle\, fought on June 28\, 1778. The NJSSAR Color Guard honor both the battle and General Von Steuben\, the Drillmaster of Valley Forge\, without whose disciplined instruction the Continental Army might have fared poorly indeed. Von Steuben’s efforts at Valley Forge are said to have first shown results on a major scale here. (Note: A Battle of Monmouth Flag Streamer is available for participating chapters.) For event details contact: Jake Rue. \n\nArrive by 11 a.m. to prepare for the ceremony at noon. Color Guard will present a wreath at the Von Steuben memorial. Speakers TBD.\nMonmouth Chapter members should arrive by 10 a.m. to help set up and man an SAR Recruiting table next to the Visitor’s Center. It will start at 10:30 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. You are invited to participate with them.\n\nMonmouth Battlefield State Park\, 20 NJ-33 Business\, Manalapan Township\, NJ 07726

SUMMARY:National (VA) - Battle of the Capes - 11:00 AM
DESCRIPTION:September 7th\, 2024\, Saturday (11:00 am) – Commemoration of the Battle of the Capes\, Virginia Beach\, VA Event Level: National \nHost/POC:  Norfolk Chapter VASSAR / John Hall. \nLocation:  Vice Admiral Francois Joseph Paul de Grasse Statue\, Fort Story\, Virginia Beach\, VA. \nFiring Event: No \nDetails: The Battle of the Chesapeake\, also known as the Battle of the Virginia Capes or simply the Battle of the Capes\, was a crucial naval battle in the American Revolutionary War that took place near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay on September 5\, 1781. The combatants were a British fleet led by Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Graves and a French fleet led by Rear Admiral Francois Joseph Paul\, the Comte de Grasse. The battle strategically prevented the Royal Navy from reinforcing or evacuating the besieged forces of Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown\, Virginia. The French achieved control of the sea lanes against the British and provided the Franco-American army with siege artillery and French reinforcements. These proved decisive in the Siege of Yorktown\, effectively securing independence for the Thirteen Colonies. (Note: this event was approved to become a National Level Event by NSSAR leadership on March 3rd\, 2024.) Virginia SAR Color Guard Attendees: Dunaway\, Lynch\, Melhuish\, Osborn\, Thompson. \nFrench Navy Color Guard Attendee: TBA.
