SUMMARY:National (VA) - Great Bridge
DESCRIPTION:250th Commemoration of the Battle of Great Bridge\n\n\nGreat Bridge Battlefield and Waterways Museum\n1775 Historic Way\nChespeake\, VA 23322\n \n\n\nSaturday\, December 06\, 2025 – 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM EDT\nCategory: NATIONAL EVENT – VASSAR SPONSORED\n\n \n\n\nThe commemoration of the Battle of Great Bridge is held annually on the first Saturday in December in coordination with the City of Chesapeake and this year we are excited to celebrate the 250th Anniversary! \nThe Battle of Great Bridge took place on December 9\, 1775. A task organized Patriot regiment of over 700 men led by Col. William Woodford\, consisting of six companies of the 2nd Virginia and five companies of the Culpeper Minute Bn.\, joined by North Carolina volunteers and small elements of the Princess Anne District Minute Bn.\, assembled on the south end of the Great Bridge causeway in early December to challenge British control over this key terrain that enabled movement into the Virginia interior and south to North Carolina. Skirmishes took place until the morning of December 9\, 1775 when a British assault force led by Capt. Charles Fordyce with 120 men of the 14th Regiment of Foot\, with support from Loyalist forces including Lord Dunmore’s Ethiopean Regiment\, attempted to assault the fortified Patriot defenses on the south end of the bridge. The causeway and bridge were narrow and surrounded by swamps\, placing the British regulars in a kill zone facing frontal and flanking fire. Alerted to the attack by Patriot sentries including William “Billy” Flora\, a free black man serving in the Princess Anne District Minute Bn.\, hundreds of Patriots manned the defenses and when the British were within 50 yards\, they commenced sustained rifle and musket fire against the tightly packed grenadiers leading the assault. The attack faltered only a few yards from the Patriot defenses with British Capt. Charles Fordyce being killed and over half of their force killed\, wounded or captured\, including 60 regulars and possibly 30 or 40 Loyalists in the pitched thirty minute battle.  Stunned\, the British troops evacuated the area that evening and fell back to safety aboard ships of the British fleet assembled in Norfolk Harbor. Col. Woodford’s Patriot forces\, reinforced by the 2nd North Carolina Regiment under Col. Robert Howe\, occupied the City of Norfolk\, their original intended destination\, on December 14th. The Patriots suffered only a single minor casualty at Great Bridge during the two weeks of contact with the British\, while the casualties resulting from the failed assault broke the will of the British and Loyalist forces. \nFor more reading:\n– Patrick H. During the American Revolution\, the house was adjacent to Fort Mercer\, the site of a colonists’ victory over the Hessians. Following the battle\, the house was used as a hospital. Acquired by the county in 1904\, the house and grounds are interpreted as Red Bank Battlefield Park and are open to the public on a daily basis for recreation. \nClick here for more information about the Battle of Red Bank and the Whitall House. \nNATIONAL COLOR GUARD EVENT: \nThe Memorial service for the 14 Continental Soldiers killed as a result of the Battle of Red bank will start at 1 PM and include the following highlights: \n\n\nSpecial Memorial Service for the 14 Rhode Island soldiers for the 1st and 2nd Rhode Island Regiment. We hope to include a representative from the 1st or 2nd RI Regiment and the Hessian Unit. \n\n\nJen Janofsky\, Curator/Director of Red Bank Battlefield\, is scheduled to speak \n\n\nHonored during the ceremony will be recognition of the Hessian Soldiers who gave their lives that day. A speaker will overview the recent archaeological dig at the North end of the park\, unveiling bone fragments from over 17 Hessians. Specific identification of the fragments is still being conducted. This is the largest find of Hessian soldier remains from the Revolutionary War. \n\n\nLegacy Marker/Heritage Flag Ceremony is planned to be conducted after the Memorial Service \n\n\nContact: Tim Ogline\, SJCSAR President\, Larry Nelson\, SJCSAR Secretary \n\n\nColor Guard: F&D? DESCRIPTION:Battle of Yorktown & Wreath laying at the Tomb of Thomas Nelson Jr.\n\n\nGrace Episcopal Church Yorktown\n111 Church St\nYorktown\, Virginia 23690\n\n \n\n\n\nSunday\, October 19\, 2025 – 9:15 AM – 10:15 AM EDT\nCategory: NATIONAL SPONSORED EVENT\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Siege of Yorktown\, also known as the Battle of Yorktown\, the surrender at Yorktown\, or the German Battle\, ending on October 19\, 1781\, at Yorktown\, Virginia\, was a decisive victory by a combined force of the American Continental Army troops led by General George Washington and French Army troops led by the Comte de Rochambeau over a British army commanded by Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis. The culmination of the Yorktown campaign\, the siege proved to be the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War in the North American region\, as the surrender by Cornwallis\, and the capture of both him and his army\, prompted the British government to negotiate an end to the conflict.\nParade formation and Wreath ceremony at Victory monument details will be published soon. \nRegistration for the Wreath ceremony at the grave of Governor Thomas Nelson jr.  is open and available by clicking here. \nNote: this event also marks the bicentennial of the return of the Marquis de Lafayette to Yorktown in October 1824 and is expected to be a significant commemoration. \n-RBM \n\n\nContact: Gary Hodges\, TNJ CHapter

SUMMARY:Presentation of Colors - Sunbelt Ag Expo - Moultrie\, GA - Noon
DESCRIPTION:Presentation of Colors at the Sunbelt Ag Expo at Noon (please be onsite by 11:00 AM) in Moultrie\, GA \nSunbelt AD Expo\, 290-G Harper Boulevard\, Moultrie\, Georgia   31788-2157 \nWe need to know of your participation AT LEAST TEN DAY in ADVANCE \n  \n******************* \nPresenting the colors at the Sunbelt Ag Expo in October  will certainly be a feather in our tricorns.   The luncheon begins at noon so we need to be on site no later than 11:00.  Guardsmen need to allow extra time as traffic is usually congested at Spence Field\, site of the Expo.  Since most of the guardsmen live north of Columbus and Macon\, they may want to come the night before. If so\, they need to make arrangements as soon as possible as lodging is at a premium for miles around during Expo.  There are only two hotels in Moultrie that I would recommend\, Hampton and Holiday Inn Express.  There are quite a few hotels in Tifton which is 30 miles north.  They need to make a reservation as soon as possible.  I will need to let Expo know how many passes we need 10 days in advance which would be Oct. 4. \nIf the guardsmen have never attended Expo\, they may want to spend the afternoon walking the grounds of North America’s premiere farm show.  The Expo includes a 100-acre exhibit area with both indoor and outdoor exhibits adjacent to a 530-acre working research farm.  Exhibits also include lawn and garden\, hunting\, fishing and family living.  The show is held at Spence Field\, site of a World War II Army Airfield training facility.  Some remnants of the airfield are still visible.  I’m sure they would generate attention as they always  do walking through Expo in their Continental attire.  \nThomas Coleman is the coordinator and has invited anyone with a camper to park it at his farm which is about 17 miles from the event site.

DESCRIPTION:Per discussions with the staff of Sycamore Shoals and we have concluded that moving the Gathering to\nthe weekend of September 19-20 would provide a new perspective on the Gathering. They had\nalready planned to have the fort full of reenactors displaying different pioneer chores in the cabins\nof the fort\, cooking\, sewing\, making black powder\, plus many other things that will tie to the launch\nof the Overmountain Men on their march to Kings Mountain on Sept. 25.  We would have to move\nthe Gathering ceremony to the Amphitheatre\, but that has now been updated and will be comfortable.\n\nDetails will be forthcoming
