The anniversary of this important Philadelphia Campaign attack should be an especially interesting and action-filled event. At this event\, guests can tour the Whitall House. Constructed in 1748 for James and Ann Whitall\, this house was designed in the Georgian style and became the centerpiece of their 400-acre plantation on the banks of the Delaware River. During the American Revolution\, the house was adjacent to Fort Mercer\, the site of a colonists’ victory over the Hessians. Following the battle\, the house was used as a hospital. Acquired by the county in 1904\, the house and grounds are interpreted as Red Bank Battlefield Park and are open to the public on a daily basis for recreation. \nClick here for more information about the Battle of Red Bank and the Whitall House. \nNATIONAL COLOR GUARD EVENT: \nThe Memorial service for the 14 Continental Soldiers killed as a result of the Battle of Red bank will start at 1 PM and include the following highlights: \n\nSpecial Memorial Service for the 14 Rhode Island soldiers for the 1st and 2nd Rhode Island Regiment. We hope to include a representative from the 1st or 2nd RI Regiment and the Hessian Unit.\nJen Janofsky\, Curator/Director of Red Bank Battlefield\, is scheduled to speak\nHonored during the ceremony will be recognition of the Hessian Soldiers who gave their lives that day. A speaker will overview the recent archaeological dig at the North end of the park\, unveiling bone fragments from over 17 Hessians. Specific identification of the fragments is still being conducted. The culmination of the Yorktown campaign\, the siege proved to be the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War in the North American region\, as the surrender by Cornwallis\, and the capture of both him and his army\, prompted the British government to negotiate an end to the conflict.\nParade formation may be viewed here (click on link): Yorktown SAR Formation\nNote: this event also marks the bicentennial of the return of the Marquis de Lafayette to Yorktown in October 1824 and is expected to be a significant commemoration.

DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED due to weather related issues in the area.\nThe Henry Laurens Chapter (Aiken) South Carolina Society and the Colonel William Few Chapter (Augusta) Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution \nCordially invite you to attend the \n244th Anniversary Commemoration of the First Siege of Augusta \nSaturday\, 1:00 PM\, September 28\, 2024 \nSalvation Army Kroc Center Auditorium\, 1833 Broad Street\, Augusta\, Georgia \nSchedule of Events: \n\n9:30 AM – 12:00 PM. We will host a combined meeting of the Georgia and South Carolina C.A.R. in the Kroc Center Auditorium.\n12:00 PM – 1:00 PM. The local SAR chapters with assistance from the Augusta Chapter\, NSDAR\, will host a luncheon consisting of BBQ sandwiches\, potato salad\, and tea provided by Larry Sconyers BBQ in the Kroc Center Lunchroom. There will also be dessert. You must sign up for the luncheon in advance and the cost is $16.00 per person.\n1:00 PM – 1:45 PM. We will conduct the commemoration ceremony in the comfortable 300-seat Kroc Center Auditorium.
