What became known as the Race to the Dan a few weeks later\, on February 14\, 1781\, became “The Crossing” when Greene’s army crossed the Dan River to safety near South Boston. The Crossing of the Dan became a turning point in the American Revolution\, precipitating events that led to the British surrender at Yorktown.

Located just off the square in Court Street Livery (16 W Court Street\, Washington\, GA) Look for the SAR Living History building signs. Various groups will have displays including one of colonial toys. Some refreshments will also be available. \n10:10 A.M. – The Georgia Society SAR combined Color Guard & Militia will gather at the Revolutionary War monument on the Washington City Square to Salute and Honor the Wilkes County Militia – (the Heroes of the Hornets’ Nest) and all Revolutionary War Patriots. \n10:30 A.M. – Color Guard and parade participants gather behind the Courthouse for the assembly of the Revolutionary War Parade — ALL the public (Children & Grownups) are welcome to participate in the event as our National Colors and re-enactors lead us around Washington Square.
