GASSAR Library Project

The GASSAR Library Project connects Georgia Society members and friends directly with opportunities to strengthen the SAR Genealogical Research Library through financial gifts and targeted book donations.

About the SAR Genealogical Research Library

The SAR Genealogical Research Library, located at National Headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky, exists to maintain and enlarge a premier collection of genealogical and historical materials for use by SAR members and the public. Its holdings have grown to more than 55,000 items, including family histories, local, county, and state records, and an array of specialized genealogy resources, placing it among the top genealogical research libraries in the country. By preserving records of the American Revolution and expanding access to quality research materials, the Library supports the SAR mission of promoting historical research, education, and patriotism.

The GASSAR Library Project

In 2025, GASSAR Historian Chris Thompson launched the GASSAR Library Project to encourage book and monetary donations on behalf of the Georgia Society to benefit the SAR Genealogical Research Library. This initiative invites Georgia compatriots, chapters, and friends to help improve and expand a collection that already ranks among the leading genealogical libraries in the nation, ensuring even stronger resources for future generations of researchers. Through this project, GASSAR seeks to demonstrate visible support for the national Library’s growth while honoring our shared commitment to documenting Revolutionary War patriots and their descendants.

How You Can Support the Library

You can participate in the GASSAR Library Project in two primary ways: direct donations to the SAR Library and purchasing items from its curated Amazon wish list.

  • Make a financial gift to the SAR Library (Friends of the Library, endowment, and other giving opportunities) by visiting the SAR donation page:
When possible, note “Georgia Society SAR – Library Project” with your gift so it can be recognized as part of this effort.
  • Purchase a specific title for the Library’s shelves from the official SAR Library Amazon book wish list:
Visit the Library Book Wishlist page at https://library.sar.org/book-wishlist/, then follow the link to the Library’s Amazon Wish List.
The Wish List contains books selected by Library staff that would make excellent additions to the collection; Amazon will ship your purchase directly to the Library, and the list is updated regularly as new titles are added.

If you wish to suggest or donate a suitable genealogy or history book directly, you may also contact the Library reference staff using the information on the Wishlist page.

Why Your Gift Matters

The Library’s budget does not always cover the full cost of all desired books, databases, and technology, so private support plays a crucial role in expanding its holdings and services. Each contribution—whether a financial donation or a book purchased from the Amazon wish list—directly strengthens the Library’s capacity to support lineage research, Revolutionary War studies, and genealogical education for SAR members and the general public. Through the GASSAR Library Project, Georgia compatriots can leave a lasting mark on a national resource that supports our own applications, supplemental records, and continued research into patriot ancestors.

Recognizing Georgia’s Support

Gifts made through this project may qualify for existing SAR Library recognition programs (such as Friends of the Library memberships and other donor categories), subject to national guidelines. GASSAR will also encourage chapters and individuals to share news of their participation, helping to inspire additional support and highlight Georgia’s leadership in strengthening the SAR Genealogical Research Library.
