Battle of Springfield Commemorative Wreath Laying

  •
  • Battleground Cemetary39 Mountain Ave., Springfield, NJ 07081 (map)

Help us commemorate the 244rd anniversaries of The Battle of Springfield, June 23, 1780, and the Battle of Connecticut Farms, June 7, 1780. These were two of the most important battles of the Revolutionary War and the last to occur in the northern theater. In two successive attacks, British and Hessian troops tried and failed to finally capture George Washington and defeat the Continental and New Jersey Militia forces that had kept them bottled up in New York City for several years. At Springfield, the second of the two battles, referred to by some as the “Forgotten Victory,” roughly 1,500 Continentals, including the 3rd NJ Regiment, and an undetermined number of militia units, blocked over 6,000 British and Hessians from attacking the main body of Washington’s army through the Hobart Gap. Two weeks earlier, the town of Connecticut Farms, since renamed Union, was largely destroyed by the invaders in a similar failed attempt.

On June 22 at 3 pm the NJSSAR Color Guard will participate in two wreath layings commemorating the Battles of Connecticut Farms and Springfield, beginning at Battleground Cemetery, 39 Mountain Avenue, Springfield, and continuing with a march to Springfield First Presbyterian Church where a second wreath will be laid.
