- A native of Athens, Ga., Billy Joe Guest was the son of the late Melvin Valco Guest Sr., and Leona Ferguson Guest. He was one of seven children, and was preceded in death by his brother, M.V. Guest, and his sister, Jean Crowther. He was the father of two children, Brian Guest and Wendy Paine. He had four grandchildren, Brian, Jr., Michael, Rachael, and Lilly. He also left behind his longtime partner, Barbara Childs.
- Billy graduated from Athens High School. He enlisted in the Air Force, serving from 1956-1958, and re-enlisting in 1966. He served two tours in Vietnam. He volunteered for his second tour, hoping to keep his younger brother out of the war. Billy was injured in a rocket attack on Da Nang Air Force base during the Tet Offensive, and he was awarded the Purple Heart. Billy retired from the US Air Force with the rank of Staff Sargent. His last posting was at Otis Air Force Base, strategic Air Command for the Eastern Seaboard. Following his retirement, the family stayed in nearby Falmouth, MA.
- After retiring from the Air Force, Billy worked at Kendell Printing Company in Falmouth, Mass., and later became the head of security for Kmart and Sears in Hyannis, Mass. In 1960-61 Billy had worked as an ordinary seaman on research vessels at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI). He returned to WHOI in 1998 as a security guard and held that position until his retirement in 2006. Following retirement, Billy and Barbara moved South to Lake Oconee to be closer to his family and seeking warmer weather.

Billy was the 6th great grandson of Captain Moses Guest Born Jan. 1750 Fauquier County, Va. and died Oct.1, 1838 in Franklin County , Ga. His grave has been marked by both NSDAR and the Athens Chapter SAR. Moses Guest married Mary Blair, a first cousin of Daniel Boone in Wilkes Co. N.C., in 1775. Moses was appointed by the Governor as an Ensign in the North Carolina militia, serving under Captain Elijah Isaacs fighting in the Indian uprising. From 1776-1780, he served a captain of foot and as a captain of horse. He served under Colonel Armstrong and Colonel Cleveland. He had a company of 50 men including his brothers William and Benjamin.
