- James Gunn was born in Virginia, March 13, 1753; attended the common schools; studied law; admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Savannah, Ga.; served during the Revolutionary War and, as a captain of dragoons, participated in the relief of Savannah, Ga., in 1782; served in county and state militia, becoming brigadier general in the latter; elected to the Continental Congress in 1787 but did not serve; elected to the United States Senate in 1789; reelected in 1795 and served from March 4, 1789, to March 3, 1801; died in Louisville, Jefferson County, Ga., July 30, 1801; interment in Old Capitol Cemetery.
