      • Charles "Gus' Gustafson Jr. was the son of Mae Sprayberry and Charles Anton Gustafson Sr. He graduated in 1958 from Campbell High School in Smyrna, GA, where he played the trombone in the band, football, basketball and ran track. He attended Young Harris College and graduated from the UGA then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1963. He was stationed in Aviano, Italy where he served as an Air Force Sentry Dog Handler. He was married to Diana Carney from 1971 to 1984, was a Realitor and worked for the Atlanta Journal until he reitired in 2006.
      • Gus Gustafson devoted years researching his family genealogy back to 1725. In May, 2013, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution approved Gus' membership with NSSAR National #187129, as he was the first to prove lineage through Revolution War Patriot William R. Gunnell, whose Patriot Grave Registry information in this database has a photo of the headstone in the Dekalb County, GA, Masters Cemetery at 5057 Flakes Mill Road.
      • Compariot Gus Gustafson was the Button Gwinnett Chapter SAR, Chapter Secretary and Editor for the Chapter Monthly Multipage Newsletter. Compatriot Gustafson received numerous Certificates of Appreciation and was awarded the NSSAR Roger Sherman Medal by the Chapter for "Meritorious Service.
      • Compatriot Charles "Gus" Gustafson's outstanding genealogy research included his discovery in Ancestry.com the U.S. Southern Claims Commission, Allowed Claims, 1871-1880, which was the only direct evidence ever found that verified the father-son lineage for Patriot William R. Gunnell and his son, William Belve Gunnell. William B. Gunnell testified that the U.S. Army which was part of General Sherman's forces took possession of his Austell, Cobb County home and property in June, 1864, just prior to the Battle of Atlanta. Among his deposition records included his statement that his father had served in the Revolutionary War, received a pension and his mother was also a Rev. War widow pensioner. National Archives Revolutionary War Pension Application W1172, confirmed their sons deposition, with the widow's affidavit providing her husband date of death, as shown on the headstone for Patriot William R. Gunnell at the Masters Cemetery, 5057 Flakes Mill Road, Dekalb County, Georgia, 30294.
      • Compatriot Gus Gustafson was preceded in death by both his parents and only sibling, Carol Ann Gustafson, who are buried in the family plot in the Mountain View Park Cemetery, 410 Whitlock Avenue, Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia. Gus' funeral service was held with full U.S. Air Force Military honors at the St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Snellville, GA, which was attended by his friends and many of his fellow Compatriots in the Button Gwinnett Chapter SAR. Gus' cremated ashes rest aside his parents, sister, and his granite SAR Compatriot Grave Marker, as he would have wanted it.

      • Compatriot Charles "Gus" Gustafson provided the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution the personal testimony of his Patriot William R. Gunnell, which was given before the Greenville District Court in South Carolina. Patriot Gunnell served under the command of Coloniel Anthony Walton White's, First Regiment of Horse in the State of Virginia, and was in the Battles of Trenton, Brandywine, Guildford Courthouse, Eutaw Springs and White Bluff, GA.
