- Angus McCurry, Sr. was born in Scotland in 1755 and came to America with an expedition on the Flora McDonald ships in 1774.
- He settled in North Carolina, joined the militia and served as a private in the Revolutionary War.
- He later moved to Elbert County, (now Hart County) Georgia becoming one of the first settlers on the Savannah River in North Georgia.
- Upon his death in 1840, he was first buried in Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery, with his remains moved in 1961 to New Harmony Methodist Church Cemetery because of the construction of Lake Hartwell.
- Angus McCurry, Sr. received land grants for his Revolutionary War service including 462 acres on Powderbag Creek, 275 acres on Lightwood Log Creek, 300 acres on Cedar Creek and 490 acres in Wayne County.
