- David Carter, Sr. was born in New Jersey, February 20, 1758 and with his family subsequently moved South residing in Virginia.
- In 1774-75, he served under COL. Daniel Morgan in Virginia. In 1777 he moved to North Carolina, enlisting (1778) as a private in the NC militia. In 1779,80? he served under General Rutherford and fought at the battle of Camden,SC. He was captured and confined on the prison ships, "Concord, "King George," and "Fidelity," in Charleston Harbor. In August 1781, he was released (exchanged) and allowed to return home to NC. In 1781-82, he again entered the militia in Wilkes County, NC and served as a mounted scout and participated in a number of skirmishes against the Tories and Loyalist forces.
- After the Revolutionary War, he and his family moved to Pendleton District, South Carolina. In 1852 following his sons, he moved to Franklin County, GA, settling near the mouth of Lightwood Creek on the Savannah River in what is now Hart County. Upon his death, December 16, 1849, he was first buried in Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery, with his remains moved in 1961 to New Harmony Methodist Church Cemetery because of the construction of Lake Hartwell.

- Three children; Sons, Micajah & David Carter, Jr. and one daughter, Mehitable who it appears was never married.
