- Samuel Long, Sr. married (1780) in Pennsylvania, Ann Williamson who also was born , 1757 in Ireland; died, 1829. Samuel and Ann had six children.
- Samuel Long was born in County Donegal, Ireland in 1753. He immigrated to America in 1762. During the American Revolution he served as an Ensign in the Pennsylvania Militia and as a Captain under Marquis de Lafayette. He was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. He served in the 2nd Battalion, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Militia in 1781.
- In 1792 Samuel Long. Sr. and family traveled to Georgia and settled in what is now the Paoli Community, Madison County, Georgia.
- One of Long's sons, Crawford W. Long, became a medical doctor and is famous for his discovery of ether as an anesthetic.
