- He was sometimes addressed as Sir John Talbot.
- He was the child of Mathew (1699-1758) and Mary Williston Talbot (1697-1736) and a descendant of the Earl of Shrewsbury.
- He first married Sarah Anthony who died between 1765 and 1768. Later he married Phoebe Talbott (1739-1806) and they were the parents of Thomas Talbot (unknown-1853), Matthew Talbott (1767-1827) and Phoebe Talbot Cresswell (1768-1806). It should be noted that this son, Matthew, served for a short time as Governor of Georgia in the Democratic-Republican Party led by Thomas Jefferson.
- John served in the Virginia House of Burgesses (1761-1775) and in the House of Delegates (1776-1782) and in the Virginia Convention of 1774 that advocated a trade boycott with Britain.
- During the war he was a Colonel in the Bedford County militia.
- After the war, in 1783, he moved to Wilkes County where he received a land grant and worked as a surveyor. He served as a state senator, as a justice of the peace, and as an Elder of the Smyrna Presbyterian Church before the building was transferred to the Methodists.
