- George Mathews was colonel of a regiment of Virginia Continentals. He was captured at the fall of Charleston in 1780. In 1783 he received a promotion to brevet brigadier general. After the Revolution he moved to Georgia. He was governor of the state in 1787 and 1793-1796. At the beginning of the War of 1812 he was brigadier general of Georgia militia. He died in Augusta while on his way to Washington to consult with the War Department.
