    • Notes
      • Jack McConnell Martin, a ’61 graduate of the United States Military Academy, lived and served his country as the embodiment of USMA’s traditions of “Duty, Honor, Country.” Jack’s smile and sense of humor, along with his contagious laughter, were an encouragement to all who knew him. The oldest of four children, Jack was born in Kingsport, TN to John Gray and Ina Elizabeth Martin.

Preparing for an Army career at West Point, Jack went through the highest standards of training, learned perseverance, resolute determination and a clear concept of truth and honor. Following graduation Jack attended the Signal Basic Course at Fort Monmouth, NJ. He completed Airborne and Ranger Training before his first assignment with the 51st Signal Battalion in the Republic of Korea. Next he served with the 501st Signal Battalion at Fort Campbell, KY and married Joan Glass. All three sons were born while Joan and Jack were in the Army for 21 years.

Jack next had assignments at the Advanced Signal Course at Fort Monmouth; Washington DC, at the Pentagon office of Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence; Viet Nam with the 69th Signal Battalion; the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, VA; an MBA from the University of Alabama; Army Electronics Command at Fort Monmouth; Commanded the Communications Command Safeguard Complex in Nekoma, ND; Executive Officer of the Corps of Cadets, 4th Regiment, West Point; Office of the Commandant, and Assistant Deputy Post Commander, West Point, NY.

Jack next commanded the 4th Battalion, 3rd Basic Training Brigade at Fort Dix, NJ, and his final assignment was with the U.S. Army Communications Command-Western Command at Fort Shafter, HI where he served as Chief, Plans and Operations Division and Deputy Commander. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in July 1982.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army General Staff Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge and the Ranger Tab.

After retirement Jack was involved with Christian Education positions in San Jose, CA and Marietta, GA from ’81-’84. He last served from ’84-’93 as Senior Project Manager at the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations in Atlanta.

Jack, along with Doug Stanberry’s help, with great excitement pursued the application process for membership in the SAR and was accepted into the Piedmont Chapter on March 31, 1997, along with his three sons, David, Andrew, and Daniel. We were and are so proud of this honor for Jack.

Looking back since Jack’s death, it is a fine tradition of remembering and honoring those men and women who, by their services and sacrifices from the war of the American Revolution to this present time of world conflict, first achieved independence for us Americans. We now continue to protect and maintain those precious freedoms we enjoy and hold dear.

Jack is a direct descendent of the patriot Private Nimrod Taylor; born in 1756 in Fauquier County, VA and died July 16, 1834 in Scott County, VA.

Jack is survived by his wife Joan; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Frieda, Andrew and Evangelina, Daniel and Joy and eight grandchildren, Sarah, David Jr., Anna, Caleb, Nick, Josh, Matt, and Madison.
