Notes |
- James Clarke “Jim” McLeroy was born on October 7, 1929 in Bogart, Georgia. Jim lived in the Atlanta area for a number of years before moving to Gainesville 24 years ago. He worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company for over 37 years.
Compatriot McLeroy was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a B.S. Degree in Education. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of the Lions Club, Lanier Men’s Garden Club and a lifetime member of the Baptist church wherever he lived. At the First Baptist Church in Gainesville, he was active member of the Merritt Sunday School Class and the Stephen Ministry of the Church.
Jim served as Secretary and President of the Lyman Hall Chapter and it was under his leadership that the magnificent monument of George Washington was dedicated in December 1999, on the 200th anniversary of the death of George Washington. The monument stands today at the corner of Washington and Green Street in the rear of the Sun Trust Bank.
Jim is survived by his wife of 54 years, daughter and son-in-law Kathy and George Boltwood, son and daughter-in-law Jimmy and Laurie McLeroy, grandchildren, Brother and Sister-in-law Ben and Caroline McLeroy, Sisters and Brothers-in-law Mary and Hugh Larkey, Martha and Neil Phillips, Jean Dickens, and a number of nieces and nephews.
We pause today to remember and reflect on the memory of one of our own compatriots who has slipped from our midst. Jim, we are here to remember the deeds that you accomplished and we appreciate your membership in the Lyman Hall Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution.
Special Flag Presentation
The "Stars and Stripes" was designed by Betsy Ross in May 1776. It became the official American Flag on June 14, 1777 by an Act of the Continental Congress. Over the next 230 years, the American flag became the very symbol of our nation's strength and unity. It remains a source of pride and inspiration for millions of citizens. And it has been a prominent icon in our nation's history.
December 14, 1999 was a special day in the life of Compatriot McLeroy. As President of the Lyman Hall Chapter, he served as Master of Ceremonies for the dedication of the monument of George Washington located on the corner of Green and Washington Streets – a gift to the city of Gainesville. It was the 200th anniversary of the death of Georgia Washington and the beautiful monument provides the citizens of Gainesville with a lasting tribute to our nations First President.
