      • Former President General James Roger Westlake,1989-90, a devoted member, leader, and mentor, passed away on 25 March 2008 at his home in Covington, Georgia. Jim Westlake was a man of many talents and interests, one of which was the Sons of the American Revolution. In fact, Jim had a room in his house that he called the “SAR Room.” He was President General during the society’s centennial year and is credited with the formation of the Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard. Thus, it was most appropriate, that the Georgia Society Color Guard provided an Honor Guard for both his interment and his memorial service. A Georgia Society Color Guardsman played ‘Taps’ at the interment ceremony.

In 1977 Jim was inducted into the Old Guard and immediately became an active participant, serving in many positions, including Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief of Staff. In 2001 Jim’s leadership abilities were recognized by his installation as Commandant. He served the Command well, utilizing the services of many Members. Active in the Color Guard Jim was a regular attendant at functions involving the unit. Members of the Old Guard were in attendance at both services and participated as the family requested.

The National Society of Washington Family Descendants was another of Jim’s special interests. Again, his dedicated service to this organization was recognized by his election as its President. He was a highly regarded scholar in the history of the Washington Family, producing several authoritative articles on this subject.

An active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, PCA, in Covington, Georgia, Jim served as a Presbyterian Ruling Elder for over forty years. In addition, he was Chairman of the Board of the Atlanta University of Biblical Studies in Decatur, Georgia.
      • May 14, 1946, was the date Jim and his high school sweetheart, Joyce Rosemary Covey, were married in Los Angeles. To this union the following children were born: Joyce Ann, Beverly Jeanne, James R., Jr., and Richard Christopher.
      • In August, 1945, Jim entered the U. S. Navy and was assigned to boot camp in San Diego. He served on USS Cape Gloucester, a small carrier transporting Marine Flying Squadrons to bases in Midway, Guam, Okinawa, and Pearl Harbor. In August, 1946, Seaman First Class Westlake was discharged in Bremerton, Washington. He was awarded the Victory Medal and Campaign Medals for the Asiatic/Pacific Theater and the American Theater. He also received the Order of the Dragon.
