      • A native Athenian, Robert was born on September 8, 1945 to Samuel Alva Hale and Constance Adele Munford Hale. Robert attended Barrow Elementary School and Athens High School. He also served in the United States Army Reserve from 1963 until 1969. Robert was a builder and contractor in the Athens area for the remainder of his life. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens.

        Robert was an avid genealogist and enjoyed spending his time in various hereditary organizations, including: National Society Sons of the American Revolution, where he served as President, Registrar, Secretary Treasurer, and was a member of the Color Guard for the Athens Chapter; Sons of the Confederate Veterans, where he served as Commander, Adjutant/Treasurer, and Head of Memorial Activities for the Brigadier General T.R.R. Cobb Camp No. 97. As Head of Veteran Memorial Activities, Robert located and marked over 300 Confederate soldiers' graves with government markers. Other organizations he was involved with included: John DeVane Chapters, Sons of the Revolution; Military Order of the Stars and Bars; Patriot Guard Riders (a motorcycle honor guard who escort fallen United States soldiers'), Wounded Warrior Project, and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

        Robert is survived by his wife of 46 years, Elaine McGalliard Hale, his son, Robert Norman Hale, Jr. (Donna), his daughter, Amy Hale West (Steve), his five grandchildren: Brittany Hale Plassmann (Matt), Zachary Hale, Samson West, Kimberly Hale, and Emily West; his sister, Mary Hale Spencer (Jon), and several nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Sam Hale, Jr.

        Robert was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and friend. His favorite pastimes were those spent with his grandchildren. He loved them dearly and they loved him in return.

        Funeral services were held on Friday, February 11, 2011 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Athens on Pulaski Street, with Dr. Paul Baxley officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.

        Pallbearers will be Ken Chance, Jimmy Flanagan, Steve Fennell, Randall Cofer, Johnny Adkins and Paul Griffith.
        Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Athens Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and members of Sons of the Confederate Veterans Camp No 97.
