- William Dunaway was born in Bedford County, Virginia in 1751. He served in the 5th Virginia Regiment as a foot soldier and helped to secure our freedom by pursuing the British across the Rapidan River to Jamestown, where the British were defeated. He then went on to Yorktown, where Cornwallis surrendered on October 18, 1781. He later joined Col. Elijah Clarke to help drive the British from Georgia.
William first married Elleanor Burton and had four sons. He later married Nancy (____) and had seven children. He moved to land acquired in the Cherokee Lottery and made his homestead in Tignall, Wilkes County, Georgia, where he died in 1830.
