John Rutledge enlisted as a private in the Second Georgia Battalion during the Revolutionary War. He served from January 1, 1782, through November 4, 1783, under Captain John Lucas and Captain William McIntosh. John came to Gwinnett County before March 30, 1819, from South Carolina and was a charter member of the Haynes Creek Primitive Baptist Church in 1826. During the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery, he received an extra draw as a Revolutionary soldier.
