A native of Mecklenburg county, North Carolina, William Swan enlisted there 1 Jun 1780 and served for three months as a Private in Fluellyn's North Carolina Troop of Riflemen. He reenlisted 1 Sep 1782 as a Private in Capt. Polk's North Carolina company of Light Dragoons in an expedition with General Rutherford. After the war, he lived in Morgan, Jasper, Newton and Harris counties, Georgia. He received a pension for his services and later died in Harris county.
