Compatriots and Friends of the Georgia Society,
During the 132nd NSSAR Congress held in Savannah, GA, an SAR Bench honoring the Patriot soldiers who fought in the battle of Savannah and commemorating the British withdrawal of July 11, 1782 was dedicated in Tricentennial Park on July 14, 2022. The ceremony began in the air conditioned Visitor’s Center Theater where the audience had a break from the 90 degree heat of the day. GA Color Guard Commander Scott Collins led a contingent of Color Guardsmen who presented the Colors to open the event. Georgia Society President Joe Vancura welcomed the attendees, and spoke about the significance of the 250th Anniversary SAR Bench. He was followed by PG Davis Wright who thanked the Georgia Society for taking the initiative in installing these two SAR benches in Savannah for our fellow Americans to see and reflect on.
Emily Beck, Director of Interpretation for the Coastal Heritage Society, welcomed the audience; spoke about the mission of the Coastal Heritage Society and the battle of Savannah.
Following the presentations in the Visitors Center, the Color Guard led the group outside to the Tricentennial Park area where the SAR bench dedication took place, complete with the presentation of the Colors and a three volley musket salute.
